I SARGINT di ZANTE

Il primo dei Sargint ad arrivare a Zante nel 1680 è stato Peter, che diede l’inizio a una generazione anglo-zantiota di personaggi dediti al commercio, alla diplomazia, all’arte.

The English family lived on the island  since the year 1680, at least (code of the Holy Trinity). During three centuries its members became very prominent citizens of Zakynthos, being especially active as businessmen, diplomats, artists.

L’attuale Romas Mansion  era stata costruita nel 1660 da un grosso mercante e vice console inglese, Robert John Geoffrey, che verso la metà del 1700 la diede in dote alla figlia sposatasi con Robert Sargint. Durante il protettorato inglese era conosciuta come la “Residenza” : dal suo balcone il politico inglese Gladstone parlò agli Zantioti durante la visita del 1860.  La casa venne acquistata nel 1880 da Alexander Romas, (1863-1914) Presidente del Parlamento Greco, ministro della Giustizia e fondatore nel 1897  insieme al suo amico Garibaldi delle Camicie Rosse Greche . Alessandro Romas fu il padre di Dionisio Roma (1908-1981) politico, valente scrittore, conosciuto per il suo romando “Periplous” che rappresenta una eccellente ricostruzione della storia dal XV° al IX° secolo. Dionisio Romas è stato insignito di importanti riconoscimenti da parte dell’Accademia di Atene.

Attualmente è stata ristrutturata dal figlio Dinos ed è visitabile come museo.

Roma’s mansion has been build during the 1660’s by the vice-consul of England at Zante, Robert John Geoffrey, and has been given, as dowry, to his son in law, Robert Sargint. During the period of the English Protection (1814-64) the mansion was the seat of the English Resident of Zante and was known to the people of the island as “Residenza”.

The mansion has been bought by Alexander Roma during the 1880’s. From then and until the Second World War became the seat of one of the two major political schemes of the island (the “Roman” party). After the total destruction of the old city of Zante, by the 1953 earthquakes, the house of the Romas represents the sole example of the old big urban zantiote architecture.

Dal figlio di Robert, Richard Sargint (1745) nacque Robert (1775) che  sposatosi con  Caterina Lunzi  ebbe Anastasio (1826-1882) valente pittore, Lisine da cui ho preso il mio secondo nome, che sposò un Arvanitaki, e Richard che sposò Clara Stravopodi, mia bisnonna, e da cui ho ereditato il mio primo nome inglesizzato in Claire. La Stravopodi era nipote di Eleni Solomos, sorella di Dionisio Solomos, l’illustre poeta nazionale greco.

Robert Sargint married Caterina Lunzi and had Anastasius, the painter, Lisine ,from whom I had my second name, and Richard who married Clara Stravopodi, my great grandmother, from whom I had my first name . Clara was nephew of Eleni Solomos, sister of Dionisio Solomos, the famous Greek  poetry. 

Da loro nacque nel 1873 la figlia Catherine da cui ho preso il mio terzo nome, che morì a 2 anni, e di cui esiste la tomba nel cimitero centrale di Zante.

Richard and Clara had the daughter Caterina, who died when she was  2 years old. Her engrave is in the central cimitery of Zakynthos.

Ebbero altri  3 figli maschi, tra i quali Gorge,  mio nonno. Gorge si sposò con Amia Papadopulo ed ebbero Richard (1909-1975) , Clara o Claretta (1912-1925) e Robert John (1915-2004), mio papà.

They also had 3 boys, one of which was Gorge, my grandfather. George married Amia and had my oncle Richard in 1909, my aunt Clara in 1912, my father Robert in 1915.

Famiglie parallele

La sorella di Clara Stravopodi, Adriana  sposò Luca Carrer (1831-1911). Il loro figlio George  (1869-1940) ebbe nel 1907 il figlio Dionisio (padre di mia cugina Marlen) e nel 1909 Luca, che sposatosi con Lily Avgustinis ebbe nel 1944 la figlia Eleni, mia cugina di terzo grado.

Clara Stravopodi’s sister Adriana, married Luca Carrer. Their son Gorge had two sons, Dionisio in 1907, father of Marlen, and Luca in 1909, that married Lily Avgustinis. In 1944 they had Eleni: She married Larry Kriezis and have Alexandro and Lila.

Eleni  con L.Kriezis,  hanno due figli: Alexandro e Lila.

L’altro figlio di Adriana Stravopodi e Luca Carrer, Spiros, ebbe il figlio Dioniosios, padre di Spiros, nato nel 1974.

Adriana Stravopodi  and Luca Carrer had another son, Spiros, father of Dionisio, who in 1974 had Spiros.

La mia antenata Caterina Lunzi era sorella di Nicolo Lunzi (1798-1885), che sposò Anna Solomos, figlia di Dimitri, fratello del poeta Dionosio Solomos. Dalla loro unione prese il via la generazione di  Cula Zoi è (nella foto con la  figlia Anna sposatasi con J. Skandami, da cui ha avuto le tre figlie, Kleri, Thalia e Linda). Mrs. Zois si è spenta a Zante all’età di 98 anni il 10 gennaio 2008.

Caterina Lunzi (Robert Sargint’s wife) was the sister of Nicolo Lunzi, who married Anna Solomos (daughter or Dimitri, brother of Dionisio Solomos). From the couple comes also Cula Zois, mother of Anne Skandami, grandmother of Klery, Thalia, Linda.

Mio zio Richard sposatosi con Marit Foen, norvegese, ha avuto nel 1951 Olaf George Sargint, mio cugino e ultimo discendente maschile dei Sargint di Zante.

My oncle Richard  married Marit Foen, from Norway, and had in 1951, Olav George.
